Abstract

Mental health issues among students are a major global concern worldwide due to academic pressure, financial concerns, and uncertainty about the future. At the same time, smartphone use is widespread in students’ everyday lives, which raises concerns about its effect on their mental health. Most existing research on the relationship between student mental health and smartphone use focuses on general student populations or international contexts. This paper aims to address the gap by examining Bangladeshi undergraduate students at American International University- Bangladesh (AIUB). We investigate how daily smartphone use influences their mental health, along with practical recommendations for effective technology management. To conduct this study, data has been collected through a Google Form Survey from 100 undergraduate students at AIUB across four departments: Economics, EEE, CSE, and BBA. Mixed methods have been applied to analyze students’ stress and anxiety level. Moreover, regression analysis and multicollinearity methods have been used to examine the association between phone usage and mental health problems. The results showed that nearly half of AIUB students are heavily reliant on their phones and a moderate correlation (r = 0.375) was found between social media related depression and perceived negative effects. Overall, we find that smartphone use has a negative impact on the mental health of AIUB students. It is recommended that students avoid late night phone use, reduce unnecessary notifications, and take regular breaks from social media. Universities should also support students by promoting mental health awareness and encouraging balanced smartphone use among students. Keywords: Mental health, Smartphone
